Search Engines and Clip Art
Search Tools
Search Tools are web sites that help you find other web resources. By typing in keywords or browsing categories you can find just about anything.
Search tools are organized in two ways: Indexes and Directories.
Directories Directories use humans to catalog web sites into categories and subcategories, sort of like the yellow pages. Since it takes time for humans to review the web sites, directories may display limited results. Some popular directories are Yahoo, Magellan, Argus ClearingHouse.
Indexes Indexes catalog web sites by sending out "bots" to collect newly published web sites. Users enter keywords to find web sites on specific topics. The search tool then looks through its catalog of collected sites and displays a list of web sites on the topic requested. Some popular Indexes are: AltaVista
Check out the following search tools:
Meta-Search Tools A meta-search tool takes your query and processes it through several indexes and directories all in one step. The result is a large number of web site listings ("hits").
