At Furgeson Academy of Communications and Technology (FACT) the instructional focus is to provide elementary age students (K-6) with a strong academic foundation that promotes better understanding and appreciation of world cultures and habitats with an emphasis on technology, broadcasting and multimedia presentation. Our unique curriculum encourages students to become actively involved in exploring the world around them participating in global learning projects that promote student achievement.

FACT TV by Furgeson Elementary Students

What's the news at Furgeson? Each morning Furgeson students, under the direction of broadcast teacher, David Franklin, air a ten-minute news program. The elite broadcast crew is comprised of students from third through sixth grade. These students must complete a job application for each position they desire to hold. Their application must include references who can attest to their good character and excellent work ethic. After applications are submitted, interviews are scheduled. In some cases like news anchors, sports commentators, and weather forecasters, an audition is also necessary.
Once a broadcast crew is hired, training begins. Under Mr. Franklin's supervision, experienced broadcast crewmembers train the new members of the team. Students operate the lights, cameras, soundboard and all other technical equipment needed for each broadcast. The news anchors, sports commentators, weather forecaster and any live reporters must "mike-up" and review their script prior to airtime. The news is comprised of several segments. Some standard segments are the lunch menu, a question of the day, a weather report and a sports update. The crew must work together as a team to ensure that the broadcast airs within the time allotment each and every day.
FACT TV is an important part of the school culture at Furgeson Academy of Communication and Technology. All students from kindergarten through sixth grade work in the broadcast studio with Mr. Franklin. Public Service Announcements (PSAs) are created in collaboration, with students and teachers suggesting topics to be addressed. Every student who views FACT TV can tell you about reciprocal teaching because PSAs are shown periodically as a part of the morning broadcast. Students recognize one another from appearances on FACT TV.
Our FACT TV Broadcast sets us apart from other elementary schools. Students are learning and applying skills that are valuable in our society today: teamwork, communication, critical thinking. Would not you like your child to be a part of the news at Furgeson?
