Modernization
Modernization ABC has nearly completed in a $137 million modernization project to refurbish all twenty-nine schools in the District. Major construction was completed by December of 2003. By July 2001, work had been completed at three elementary and two middle schools. During the summer of 2001, seven elementary schools and one middle school were modernized. The summer modernization efforts were accomplished in 68 working days. There were two advantages for compressing modernization into the summer months; there was no disruption to instruction and there was no need to provide alternative housing. Student learning and the modernization budget both benefit. Not all projects conformed to the concentrated summer plan. To be eligible, a projects scope of work had to be one that can be completed in 60 plus days.School modernization varied according to the needs of each site but generally included improvements to heating and ventilating systems, roofs, walls, floors, technology, seismic upgrades, classrooms, libraries, and administrative offices. Much of the modernization budget was designated for mandated items such as hazardous materials abatement, structural repairs, code required upgrades to electrical systems, plumbing, fire alarms, and compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. What students and patrons see is fresh paint and new floor covering. Schools look fresh, clean, and cared for now. All elementary schools had new and exciting playground equipment installed as a result of Modernization. Technology is an important component to modernization. All classrooms are now connected to the Internet. There are phones in every classroom as well. The phones increase security and safety and improve communication with parents. Every teacher has a voice mailbox. The current phase of Modernization involves asphalt work at all sites. This work is scheduled for completion over the summer of 2004. The final phase of Modernization will cover sprinklers and landscaping at all K-12 schools. If you would like to see some before and after modernization photographs, please click here. |
